Honor Roll Hospitals
The annual U.S. News and World Report’s best hospitals list evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals in more than 30 medical and surgical services. The top 20 hospitals in the country with “exceptional breadth and depth of excellence” make up the list’s honor roll. From NYC, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York - Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia and Cornell, and NYU Langone Hospitals, along with North Shore University at Northwell Health in nearby Manhasset, made the list. These hospitals are not numerically ranked.
Evaluation Criteria
The news outlet evaluated each hospital’s performance on objective measures such as risk - adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications, and level of nursing care. Top 25 Ranked Departments
Eight Mount Sinai Health System departments ranked in the nation’s top 25 by U.S. News and World Report. Seven departments at the Mount Sinai Hospital and one at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) achieved this feat. Four of the Mount Sinai Hospital’s top 25 departments improved their rankings from last year: cardiology/heart surgery (No. 7, up from No. 10 last year), gastroenterology/gi surgery (No. 8, up from No. 9), neurology/neurosurgery (No. 14, up from No. 15), and nephrology (No. 23, up from No. 47). The other departments at the Mount Sinai Hospital ranked in the nation’s top 25 were geriatrics (No. 3), diabetes & endocrinology (No. 21), and ear, nose & throat (No. 23). NYEE’s ophthalmology department made the top 25 this year, ranking No. 11.
Other Ranked Departments
Mount Sinai Health System departments ranked in the top 50 were urology at the Mount Sinai Hospital (No. 26, up from No. 27) and ear, nose and throat at NYEE (No. 42, not ranked last year). Six other departments in the Mount Sinai Health System were ranked as “high performing,” a category that represents the top 25 percent of all hospitals surveyed.
