Has anyone figured it out?
As a plastic surgeon in Philadelphia, I would like to provide an overview of the potential risks associated with Natrelle breast implants.
Natrelle breast implants, manufactured by Allergan, are a popular choice for women seeking breast augmentation or reconstruction. While these implants are generally safe and effective, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and to have an open discussion with your surgeon about your individual case and concerns.
One of the primary risks associated with Natrelle breast implants is the development of a condition known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that can develop in the scar tissue surrounding the implant. This condition is estimated to occur in approximately 1 in 3,000 to 30,000 women with textured breast implants, such as some Natrelle models. Early detection and treatment are crucial, and regular monitoring by your surgeon is recommended.
Another potential complication is capsular contracture, which occurs when the scar tissue around the implant tightens and hardens, causing the breast to feel firm or distorted. This can happen gradually over time or after an injury or infection. Capsular contracture may require additional surgery to release or remove the scar tissue.
Breast implants, including Natrelle, are also associated with a small risk of rupture or leakage. This can occur due to normal wear and tear over time or as a result of trauma or injury. If a saline implant ruptures, the saline solution will be safely absorbed by the body. However, if a silicone implant ruptures, the silicone may leak into the surrounding tissue, potentially causing inflammation or other complications. Regular MRI or ultrasound screening is recommended to detect any silent ruptures.
Other potential risks include infection, bleeding, and changes in nipple and breast sensation. It is also important to note that breast implants, including Natrelle, are not considered lifetime devices and may need to be replaced or removed at some point in the future.
When considering Natrelle breast implants, it is crucial to have a thorough discussion with your plastic surgeon about the potential risks, benefits, and your individual goals and expectations. Your surgeon will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan and provide guidance on managing any potential complications that may arise. Regular follow-up appointments and monitoring are essential to ensure the long-term health and satisfaction with your breast implants.
