Is anyone else confused?
As a plastic surgeon, I am often asked questions about various aspects of the field, including Lasik surgery. Lasik is a type of refractive surgery that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. The procedure itself typically takes just a few minutes to complete and has been shown to be safe and effective for many people.
When it comes to Lasik surgery, one question that patients often ask is about when they can rub their eyes after the procedure. It's natural for people to want to touch or rub their eyes after getting Lasik, but this could potentially harm the healing corneal flap or cause discomfort. Here are a few tips on when it would be safe and appropriate to rub your eyes after having Lasik surgery:
Wait until you have recovered from anesthesia - The first 24 hours following Lasik surgery should be spent resting at home without any activities that could strain the eyes, such as watching television or reading books. You will also need to avoid rubbing your eyes while under anesthesia and for about an hour after waking up post-surgery.
Wait until your vision is stable - After Lasik, it may take a few days for your vision to stabilize completely. During this time, you should refrain from rubbing your eyes as they could be sensitive or irritated due to the healing process of the corneal flap. Additionally, any activity that strains your eyes (such as reading), would also not be advisable until your vision is stable post-surgery.
Wait until your doctor gives clearance - Before you rub your eyes after Lasik surgery, it's important for you to consult with your plastic surgeon first and get their approval or advice on when it might be safe for you to touch them without causing any discomfort or damage to the corneal flap. Some surgeons may advise waiting a week or even longer before rubbing one's eyes after having Lasik surgery, depending on the patient’s individual healing process.
Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands - It is crucial that you keep your hands clean and avoid touching your eyes with dirty fingers as it could lead to infection in the cornea area post-surgery. You should also refrain from using eye makeup until cleared by your surgeon, because it may introduce bacteria or irritants into your eyes.
In conclusion, while it is natural for people to want to rub their eyes after having Lasik surgery, doing so could potentially cause discomfort or harm the healing corneal flap. It's best to wait at least 24 hours post-op before touching your eyes and get clearance from your plastic surgeon first. With proper precautions taken and following the advice of your doctor, you should be able to safely enjoy improved vision after Lasik surgery without any complications.
